Wilderness First Responder Course

The College of Idaho will host Wilderness Medicine Training Center for a WFR hybrid course. WMTC’s hybrid distance learning project (DLP) Wilderness First Responder course requires completion of our home study program and four online exams prior to attending a five day practical session. The DLP Wilderness First Responder is designed for students who are able to study the didactic material on their own using: our field manual, “the Wilderness Medicine Handbook” and the course web site. Access to a computer and the internet are mandatory; broadband/high speed access is required. If you like self-study, are disciplined, computer literate, and have limited time to attend a practical session, then a hybrid DLP Wilderness First Responder is your best choice. Wilderness First Responder is the industry standard for wilderness medical training and is designed specifically to provide you with the tools to make critical emergency care and evacuation decisions in remote locations. Course topics include, but are not limited to: trauma: wound management, realigning fractures and dislocations, improvised splinting techniques; environmental: allergies, hypo & hyperthermia; medical: gastrointestinal, infections, cardiac and respiratory conditions, patient monitoring and long-term management and care. Current EMTs can also register for the WEMT module to upgrade their urban EMT to a Wilderness EMT (WEMT); while the practical session is the same for both WFRs and WEMTs, the WEMT website and tests contain more detailed anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology and WEMTs are held to a higher level of mastery during the practical session. Price: $650 Dates: March 20-24. Online materials will be sent after registration is completed. Contact: Genny Gerke ggerke@collegeofidaho.edu or 208-459-5216
